What happens if I don't pay my storage unit in Georgia?

Under the statutory agreement language in O.C.G.A. 10-4-213, rent is due by the 1st and you are in default if it is not paid by the 7th. The owner can then deny you access without notice. After 30 days in default, the owner can send a written lien notice demanding payment within at least 14 days. If you still don't pay, the owner can advertise and sell your belongings.

How long before a storage unit is auctioned in Georgia?

Under O.C.G.A. 10-4-213, the owner can start enforcing the lien after 30 days of continuous default. The written notice must give you at least 14 days to pay. The sale is then advertised, and it can happen no sooner than 15 days after the ad runs. Online auction websites count as public sales. Until the sale happens, you can redeem your property by paying the lien amount plus reasonable expenses.

How much can a Georgia storage facility charge for a late fee?

O.C.G.A. 10-4-217 lets an owner charge a late fee set out in the rental agreement. The fee can be up to $20 per month or 20 percent of the monthly rent per month late, whichever is greater. This applies to agreements entered into, extended or renewed, and to late payments, on or after July 1, 2019. So on a $150 unit, the cap is $30 a month.

How will a Georgia storage facility notify me before selling my things?

O.C.G.A. 10-4-213 requires written notice delivered in person, by verified mail (such as certified mail) or by email to your last known address. If the owner emails the notice and gets no response or delivery receipt, it must also send it by verified mail. The notice must itemize what you owe and give the owner's contact details. It must also set a payment deadline at least 14 days out. Keep your address and email current with the facility.

Can a storage facility in Georgia tow my car, boat or trailer?

Yes. Under O.C.G.A. 10-4-213, if the stored property is a motor vehicle, trailer or watercraft and rent stays unpaid 60 days after it was due, the owner can have it towed instead of selling it at a lien sale. Once the tow company takes possession, the owner is not liable for the vehicle or any damage to it. Vehicle lien sales also must be advertised in the county legal organ.

What can't you put in a storage unit?

Georgia's statutory rental agreement language bars explosives, highly flammable goods and anything that would endanger the space. Operators add their own lists. Public Storage, for example, prohibits food, plants or animals, flammables, items that give off fumes, hazardous or illegal items, and non-operating or unregistered vehicles. Georgia law (O.C.G.A. 10-4-216) also forbids living in a storage unit.

What size storage unit do I need for a 2-bedroom?

The published guides disagree. SpareFoot's text says a 10×10 holds two bedrooms plus a family room and a 10×15 holds a two- or three-bedroom house. U-Haul says a 10×10 fits about three rooms and a 10×15 about four. For a full 2-bedroom home with appliances, a 10×15 is the safer choice. A sparsely furnished 2-bedroom apartment may fit in a 10×10.

SpareFoot says it fits furniture from two bedrooms and a family room. In Lumpkin County, posted non-climate 10×10 rates were $65 to $120 a month on October 19, 2026.
