What fits in a 10×10 storage unit? Two size guides disagree

The short answer

Storage size guides do not agree. U-Haul says a 10 x 10 holds about three rooms of belongings; SpareFoot says two bedrooms plus a family room, and puts a two- or three-bedroom house in a 10 x 15. Here is what each guide says about the common sizes, and how to choose when you fall between two.

Every storage company publishes a size guide, and they describe the same unit sizes in different words. Two of the most-read guides, U-Haul’s and SpareFoot’s, give noticeably different answers for the same unit. Our size estimator uses U-Haul’s guide throughout, so its answers are consistent; this article puts the two side by side.

5 x 10: the studio size

U-Haul: Ideal for a studio or one-bedroom apartment; besides boxes of clothes and decorations it can hold a queen-size mattress, dresser and nightstands, flatscreen TV and stand, couch/recliner/chair, tools, and bike/weights/sports equipment.

SpareFoot agrees on the use: it says a 5 x 10 easily fits the furniture from a studio or one-bedroom apartment.

10 x 10: where they part ways

U-Haul: Most popular size; fits about three rooms’ worth of belongings, such as a king mattress, living room furniture set, large appliances, entertainment centers, and coffee and end tables.

SpareFoot describes a 10 x 10 as about the size of an average bedroom that fits the furniture from two bedrooms and an entire family room, and its chart labels it for a two-bedroom apartment or house.

10 x 15: three rooms or a whole house?

U-Haul: A small step up from 10×10; holds 4 rooms’ worth of stuff, good for moving between apartments or homes or freeing up garage space.

SpareFoot says a 10 x 15 holds the contents of a two- or three-bedroom house.

How to choose when you are between two

  • Count big pieces, not rooms: sofas, beds, dressers, appliances. A sparse two-bedroom fits where a full one does not.
  • If you need to reach things while they are stored, take the bigger unit and leave an aisle.
  • If you will not touch it until you move, the smaller unit packed to the ceiling usually works.
  • Ask the facility whether you can move up a size later without a new admin fee.

Then use the facility matcher to see which facilities near Dahlonega list the size you picked.
